Despite poor weather, around 200 cyclists braved thunder, lightening and heavy showers, to take part in the Peace Hospice’s first ever cycle ride on Sunday.
‘Pedal for Peace’ started and ended in Cassiobury Park with cyclists choosing to take part in a 10, 20 or 30 mile sponsored route around the Watford area.
The Hospice’s Community Fundraising Manager, Gill Crowson said ‘It was a fantastic event. It was great to see 200 cyclists and a host of volunteers, up so early to support our first ever cycle ride in Watford.
The black clouds and heavy rain didn’t deter people from enjoying themselves and I’m confident that this will be the first of many cycle events at the Hospice’!
One of the participants Helen Kay from Bricket Wood said ‘This is the first time that I’ve been on a bike in 5 years. My friend’s Dad was a patient at the Peace Hospice and I really wanted to do it to raise money for a really worthwhile cause’.
Another cyclist, Mustapha Nyass, aged 20 from Watford said ‘Cycling is my hobby, so it’s nice to do something I enjoy for a good charity.’
In the afternoon, families gathered in Cassiobury Park for wide ranging entertainment including live music, indian dancing, salsa dancing, baton twirling and attractions including pedal ponies, a coconut shy and climbing wall.
The next big Hospice fundraising event to take place is the Gala Dinner at the Colosseum on Saturday 18th October which is celebrating 15 years of providing Hospice care.
