Around 200 cyclists descended on Cassiobury Park, Watford last weekend for the Peace Hospice’s annual Pedal for Peace challenge.
Participants chose from a 10, 20 or 30 mile course with the longer distance passing through parts of Shenley, Bricket Wood, London Colney, Borehamwood and Radlett.
Local cyclist, Mary D’Souza from Garston said ‘I was carrying out the ride in memory of my Dad's good friend Fred Maguire who spent a night at the Hospice where he later died. I cycled with my friend Sam whose father also died at the Hospice earlier this year. I went for the 10 mile option with 5 other friends. We took it easy and had good fun along the route. Since getting married and having kids 12 years ago my bike hasn’t moved in all that time from outside of the house. I didn’t check it until the day and it was a bit rusty and squeaky when I came to use it but Cycles UK were on hand when we got there to give it a quick MOT before I set off!’
Hospice Community Fundraising Manager and event organiser, Gill Crowson said ‘It was a brilliant day and the atmosphere was tremendous. Everyone was having so much fun. The event seems to get bigger and better each year and everyone was united in their aim of getting behind the Hospice.’
She added ‘The Peace Hospice receives less than 20% from the NHS and relies on the support of local people to keep its services going. We need to raise £3.8 million in charitable income this year so that we can continue to support people with a life limiting or terminal illness from across South West Hertfordshire.'
The event which is now in its fifth year looks set to raise around £11k for the Hospice. The Hospice is looking at introducing a longer route next year and a route around Cassiobury Park for families.
