Red hot coals fail to halt firewalkers!

Friday, 23 November 2007
Over £10,000 was raised for the Peace Hospice and Hospice of St Francis as over 100 people carried out a firewalk on behalf of the charities. Temperatures of more than 1,200oF didn't stop the brave firewalkers achieve the ultimate test of mind over matter across the 20 foot track of hot burning coals.

Big Brother stars Nicky Maxwell and Tracey Barnard also undertook the walk on behalf of the Peace Hospice. Nicky, a regular supporter of the Hospice commented 'It was fantastic! I was really excited about doing the walk, but got a bit nervous as we lined up. Fortunately the adrenalin kicked in and I flew across. I even went back for a second time and did it all over again'.

One of the Hospice's older walkers Sandra Churchill said 'We had a motivational training session before we started and I really felt ready to do the walk. When I got outside and saw the big crowd and saw the burning coals and heard the drums going, I didn't know if I could do it as I got all nervous. I'm not sure how I managed to do it but I did and was really happy when I finished. It was a great atmosphere amongst all the fire walkers. I would definately do it again'!

Corporate Development Manager for the Peace Hospice Maggie Grand who organised the event said 'It was a fantastic evening and everyone came through the walk unscathed. We had a large crowd that turned up to support the firewalkers, with fire jugglers and drummers making it a great atmosphere! I am extremely grateful to everyone who carried out the walk on behalf of the Hospice as it has helped to raise vital funds for us'.

The Peace Hospice provides specialist palliative care for people from across South West Hertfordshire with cancer or other terminal illness. The care of the Hospice is holistic, looking after the whole person, and their family/carers, helping with emotional and spiritual issues as well as physical symptoms. The Hospice focuses on enabling patients to live their lives to the full and providing the best quality of life when a cure is not possible.

It costs £3.1m a year to provide these services and over 75% of this is supported through charitable donations like this fundraising event. All the care the Hospice provides to its patients is free.
