Emotional service as loved ones are remembered

Thursday, 03 December 2009
Torrential rain on a cold November evening failed to deter around 700 people from attending the Peace Hospice’s annual Lights of Love ceremony on Wednesday.

The emotional event gave visitors an opportunity to reflect on the loss of loved ones, and included carol singing, poetry readings, and an opportunity to dedicate a light in memory of a loved one.

The Reverend Maureen Hider, Associate Minister from Croxley Green Baptist Church, led the non-denominational service.  Attendees sung a number of Christmas carols that included a performance by the Watford Philharmonic Society of the Christmas hymn ‘Silent Night’.

The service included 4 readings entitled ‘You are gone’ read by Hospice at Home nurse, Shiela Joiner, ‘The Garden at Dusk’ read by Darren Beharry, Hospice Direct Marketing Manager,‘The Tide Recedes’ read by Hospice volunteer Rowena Tylden-Pattenson and “Light a Candle” read by Hospice Spiritual Care Co-ordinator Lynn Bassett.

Event organiser Gill Crowson said ‘It was once again an emotional service that has become such an important occasion in the lives of so many people.

I would like to especially thank Reverend Maureen Hider who led the service tonight. This was quite emotional as this is the 5th and final year she has done this. Maureen is undertaking other duties within the community which means she won’t be able to help out anymore but I’m delighted that Lynn Bassett has agreed to step into her shoes. I would also like to thank the Borehamwood Brass Band, Charlotte Smith, the Choir of Watford Philharmonic Society, Robert Rowley, Marks & Spencer, Sainsburys, Dome Roundabout and the Colosseum staff for their support along with Hospice staff and volunteers. Lights of Love would not be successful without their continuing help'.

The next Hospice event to take place is Dress Down Day on Friday 29th January.
