New Trustees appointed at Hospice

Tuesday, 10 November 2009
The Peace Hospice has recently appointed three new members to its Board of Trustees.    David Ellis, Professor Robert Elkeles and Christine Stephens have joined the 13 member Board who carry an overarching responsibility for the strategic direction of the Hospice.  The Hospice based in Watford provides specialist palliative care for people from across South West Hertfordshire who have a life limiting or terminal illness.

The addition of the new Trustees comes at a time when the Hospice is providing more care to more patients than ever before.  The charity needs to raise £3 million of charitable income every year to continue running and developing its services and the care it provides to its patients and their families is free.

The Hospice’s Chair of Trustees, Stuart Nagler, said ‘We are delighted to announce the appointment of three new trustees to the Peace Hospice – David Ellis who has a business and commercial skills background, Doctor Professor Robert Elkelles brings his medical skills and Christine Stephens who brings her skills as an HR consultant.  This combination of backgrounds, added to the existing trustees, goes to creating a balanced team which brings enthusiasm and experience to develop future strategy and deal with the many challenges we face in these difficult times’.

Speaking about her appointment, Christine Stephens said ''I am delighted to be joining the Board of Trustees. I have always been so impressed with all who work for the Hospice and feel honored to be a part of such a committed and dedicated team''.

Most of the Hospice’s patients have cancer but an increasing number of others have conditions such as end stage heart disease, respiratory and neurological disease. The care the Hospice provides is holistic, looking after the whole person, and their family/carers, helping with emotional and spiritual issues as well as physical symptoms. The Hospice focuses on enabling patients to live their lives to the full and providing the best quality of life when a cure is not possible.

The Hospice has a team of specialist staff including doctors, nurses and counsellors providing inpatient, day and outpatient care, a hospice at home service, family and bereavement support.
